about the curriculum
The Parenting Journey is a 12-session curriculum created for parents whose own childhood did not provide them with a solid foundation for nurturing themselves or their children. The curriculum was developed by the Family Center of Somerville, MA and cited as an evidence-based program by the Children’s Trust.
What does the program offer?
- The Parenting Journey focuses on the parent as a person rather than on the child or the child in a disciplinary relationship with the parent.
- Parents are given the opportunity and space to develop themselves as individuals capable of making responsible and informed choices in rearing their children.
- An emphasis in placed on attitudes that enhance good parenting: respect, helping each other, listening empathetically and being curious.
Who can participate?
The Parenting Journey is open to parents raising children, at least one of whom is between the ages of 0 – 6 years, who reside in the City of Lawrence, MA.
What time and where is the program held?
The Parenting Journey is held three times each year. Most often, classes are held during the evening, although mid-day sessions have been held depending on what it is most convenient for all participants. Classes are held at Family Services in the group program space. Child care is provided on site in the adjacent Kids Room.
