Who are Little Friends?

Little Friends are between the ages of 6 and 14 and come from all different backgrounds, races and religions.

Who are Big Friends?

Big Friends are adults, at least 16 years old, who as mature, responsible and caring adults, can relate in a positive and meaningful way to a young child. They must complete an approval process, which includes a detailed interview, reference information, police checks, and background information.

How much time do Bigs and Littles spend together?

The amount of time spent together varies greatly. However, mentors and mentees should commit to meet 2-4 times a month and spend between 6 and 8 hours together each time for at least one year.

What do Bigs and Littles do?

Matches do many different things together, depending on their interests. They could go to movies, the beach, bake cookies, go for a bike ride, attend sporting events or mostly anything else they are both interested in doing . What is most important is the time they share together!

How are Bigs and Littles matched?

Bigs and Littles are matched on the basis of geography, according to the needs of the Little and the skills the Big has to meet those needs, and on the basis of shared interests. The preferences of all involved are considered as well.

Does it cost money to be in the program?

No, our program is free. Only the activities the matches choose could cost money. Big Friends Little Friends encourages low or no-cost activities and sometimes offers planned activities for participants in the program. However, it does cost Family Services approximately $1,500/year to make and support a match.

Are male Little Friends ever matched with female Big Friends?

Yes. Boys 12 years old and younger can be matched with a female Big Friend. There are many more little boys on our waiting list than little girls.

How long will it take for my child to get a Big Friend?

It is difficult to give an exact time because there are many factors that could affect the waiting time for your child. We encourage you to begin the process as soon as possible, after talking with your child to make sure he/she is interested in having a Big Friend.

How long will it take for a volunteer to be matched with a Little Friend?

It takes about a month to be screened, approved and matched with a child whose geographical location, needs and personality best suits the volunteer.
