You are part of this story…
Picture a 13-year-old girl with only her younger sister to call family living in a makeshift shelter far away from what was once her home, being subjected to human trafficking and gang violence, with no access to healthcare, education, nutrition or a safe place to live. These were Milagros’ circumstances not long ago. So horrific was her story that it made the national news. Thankfully, a caring woman in Lawrence, MA saw her story and reached out to become the foster parent for Milagro, then 15, and her 1-year-old son.
As with many individuals and families, changing the life trajectory of someone mired in such misfortune takes a village. When she arrived in Lawrence, Family Services became that village for Milagro, and her story turned from tragedy to triumph.
Family Services always supported me in my studies and struggles as a young mom, cheering me on and celebrating my accomplishments.
At Family Services, Milagro established the building blocks for her son’s healthy development and overcame her own education loss and language barriers – and did so with remarkable success. In fact, Milagro was able to take college courses during high school, graduating with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree last May! She did this all while raising her son, being an active parent in his kindergarten class, and participating in typical high school activities like going to the prom, getting her driver’s license, and creating positive friendships.
It was the little details like when my Family Services’ case manager would send me encouraging messages when she knew I had a test coming up. Or celebrating when my son slept the night in his own bed. She knew how important that was for us.
Milagro’s story is just one example of how Family Services helps children and families grow and thrive, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
I’ve never really gotten that kind of continual presence in my life, and for that, I am thankful.
There are so many more individuals like Milagro who need our help – and yours. Send that help today! Please make a gift to Family Services so we can support Milagro and thousands of others like her.
